Chandigarh: In a significant operation against cross-border smuggling and terrorism, the Amritsar Rural Police have detained a suspect named Jarman Singh, who has connections to the ISI. Authorities seized a Glock 9mm pistol, a .30 caliber pistol, three magazines, and counterfeit currency amounting to Rs 2,15,500, as confirmed by Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.
Initial investigations indicate that the seized items were dispatched by operatives of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from Pakistan, aiming to incite unrest in the area, according to DGP Yadav.
A first information report (FIR) has been filed at the Gharinda police station in Amritsar, and further inquiries are underway to explore both forward and backward connections.
In a related development last week, the Counter Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar successfully thwarted a potential terror attack by arresting an ISI operative and recovering a hand grenade.
The suspect, identified as Jaiveer Tyagi, alias Jawed, hails from Baroli village in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, but has been residing in Ludhiana.
DGP Yadav reported that the CI team had received intelligence about a foreign-based individual named Sehlam, who is affiliated with the ISI, and his cousin Jaiveer Tyagi, who were plotting to target government infrastructure through terror attacks across various cities to disrupt peace.
The intelligence further revealed that Tyagi had retrieved the hand grenade from the Amritsar area and was awaiting his accomplices near Tara Wala Pul to execute a significant crime. Acting on credible information, the police conducted an intelligence-led operation and apprehended Tyagi, recovering the grenade from him.
The investigation has shown that Tyagi has been living in Ludhiana for approximately 14-15 years and was communicating with Sehlam via encrypted messaging applications. It was also discovered that Tyagi procured the grenade under Sehlam's instructions.
